How To Drive On Sand

Driving on sand is a completely different experience from cruising down the paved roads of Cape Cod. Loose terrain shifts under your tires, traction drops, and one wrong move can leave you stuck. Whether you're heading to the beach or exploring off-road trails near Orleans, knowing how to drive on sand can make the difference between a great adventure and a stressful situation. Follow these seven practical tips from Ira Toyota of Orleans's service department, and you'll be navigating sandy terrain in your new Toyota like a pro.

7 Tips For Driving Your Toyota On Sand

1. Air Down (15 PSI)

Before you hit the sand, lower the pressure on all four tires to about 15 PSI. You can do this with something as simple as a stick or a house key pressed into the valve.

2. Put In 4WD

Engage your four-wheel drive system before entering sandy terrain. In most Toyota models, you will need to put the transmission in neutral, turn the dial to 4Hi or 4Lo, and then shift back into Drive.

3. Don't Let Off The Gas (Momentum)

Momentum is everything when driving on sand. You will feel moments where it seems like your vehicle is about to get stuck. It can be nerve-wracking, but don't let off the gas. Steady momentum is your friend!

4. Wide Turns

Sharp turns are one of the fastest ways to get stuck. When changing direction, make wide, gradual turns and keep your path as straight as possible.

5. Right Equipment

Preparation is key. Before heading out, make sure you have a tire pressure gauge, a tow strap, a wooden jack board, and a shovel.

6. Avoid Wet Sand (Near Shore)

Shorelines are pretty, but wet sand can be deceptively soft and heavy. It is much easier to get stuck in wet sand than in dry sand further from the shore.

7. If You Get Stuck

If you do get stuck, don't panic. Shift into reverse, as this gear provides the most torque. Place your floor mats rubber side up under the tires for added grip, and use your tow strap to enlist the help of a nearby 4WD vehicle.
