Step-by-Step: How to Check Transmission Fluids
1.Prepare Your Vehicle
To prepare your vehicle for a transmission fluid check, you’ll need to park it on a stable and level surface. You must also have it in park or neutral, depending on the instructions in your owner’s manual.
Allow your vehicle to warm up before checking the fluid.
2.Locate the Dipstick
Now, locate the transmission fluid dipstick. You’ll find it closer to the back of the engine rather than in the front like the engine oil dipstick.
3.Wipe Dipstick and Dip It Back in
After you’ve located the correct dipstick, take it out and wipe off the oil with a cloth. Then, insert it fully and remove it again.
Doing this allows you to get an accurate reading of the fluid level.
4.Examine the Dipstick
Now, it’s time to check your transmission fluid. You’ll notice two markings on the dipstick. The first one indicates a “full” reading when the transmission is cold and the second indicates a “full” reading when the transmission is warm.
Your transmission fluid level should be at the second marking. If the fluid is not at this marking, then that means you should top off your transmission fluid.

5. Add Transmission Fluid

To complete this step on your own, make sure you’re wearing protective gloves and using a funnel. Carefully and slowly, fill up the transmission fluid to the correct marking.
6. Reinsert the Dipstick
Once you’ve finished checking your transmission fluid and refilled, if necessary, reinsert the dipstick, close the hood, and shut off your car.
